SPECIAL THEME FOR 2025 – DATA MANAGEMENT AND SITUATION AWARENESS
We all know the big themes in shipping are decarbonisation, maintaining reliable IT infrastructure and cybersecurity, and improving safety and efficiency. And digital technology has a big role to play in all of these.

We will look at how we can do it better at Digital Ship Athens – by splitting up the challenge into ‘data management’ and ‘situation awareness’.

DECARBONISATION - how do we manage all the data about emissions so that the right people can have the information in front of them to make decisions about decarbonisation, or to verify that a ship is compliant?

IT INFRASTRUCTURE - what data would help us best determine that our IT infrastructure and communications systems are running reliably and securely and at minimum cost, and help us make appropriate decisions?

SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY - what data would best help us keep on top of safety of operations, ensure crew have the training they need, the vessel is well maintained, and help staff determine what action to take?

Also in navigation - what data best helps navigators ensure safety and make good judgements?

AI is part of all of this – we can run AI better on well managed data, and we use AI to help provide insights and support situation awareness.
